Cloud-based IT developer athenahealth announced Aug. 29 that it has acquired the care coordination platform Patient IO to expand the company's focus on patient-centered care.

The 'API-first' architecture of Patient IO will form the foundation of athenawell, the company's patient-facing mobile application. According to officials, it's live with select clients and will be made available as a native component of the service to new athenahealth Population Health clients starting in the fall.

Patient IO's platform is used by providers to engage patients and their caregivers outside of the hospital. The transaction will bring the mobile and web-based application to athenahealth's population health service. Financial terms of the agreement weren't immediately disclosed.

"By taking a patient-centered approach to development and embracing the potential of mobile, together we can reach more healthcare organizations than ever before," said Jason Bornhorst, Patient IO co-founder and CEO, in a statement.

"Our combined offering will deliver actionable insights that help our customer organizations transition to a value-based care environment, improving outcomes and quality at every turn," he added.

The Patient IO team which includes Bornhorst, Chief Technology Officer Brian Gambs and Chief Product Officer Colin Anawaty, will join athenahealth Austin.

More than 30 clinical sites currently utilize Patient IO for patient care coordination, according to officials. These companies will continue to be served by the company.

"Care coordination and patient self-management is the next big ground on which healthcare will compete," Jon Porter, senior vice president of Emerging Services, athenahealth, said in a statement.

"By adding Patient IO to our portfolio and delivering their solution as a native component of athenahealth's population health services, we've been able to strengthen our ability to partner with providers as they enter into and become masters of value-based care delivery," he added. Patient IO accelerates our movement towards an exciting strategic milestone: becoming a trusted resource and partner to the patient."
